What to make of vainglorious mortal women who beleieved that they were more beautiful than gods, yet dispossessed of the good sense to allay their pompous conceits? Medusa was beautiful enough to attract and make love to Poseidon, but soon paid a terrible price for her indiscretions near Athena's temple - cursed with a gaze that turned the hapless onlooker into stone!
